They say that a little healthy competition never hurt anyone and it seems that might be the case with Tesla and Volkswagen. On Friday, local media reports in Germany revealed that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Volkswagen Herbert Diess met in Germany, with the former even taking a test drive with the latter's ID.3 electric vehicle.

Sources who refused to be identified also told Bloomberg that Musk inspected the ID.4 electric SUV that is planned to launch toward the end of the year. According to the media outlet, a spokesman for Volkswagen confirmed the meeting between the two executives but refused to give any further details.

This all happened after Musk left Berlin to fly to the airport in Braunschweig (Brunswick) which is close to Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg. There he had a two-hour meeting with Diess.

Diess is a long time fan of Musk. On a Linkedin post in July, he said: "Elon Musk delivers results that many did not think possible. They show: you can be profitable with electric cars. As one of the few car manufacturers (Porsche AG also, for example), Tesla will drive through the corona crisis without a quarter of losses."

Musk had been visiting Germany since Tuesday. He visited the pharmaceutical company Curevac GmbH, as well as several politicians, and his new factory GigaBerlin outside the German capital in Gruenheide. Once completed, the newly-constructed factory is set to be Tesla’s first in Europe and will be able to produce as many as 500,000 new vehicles a year.
